The Schwartz ADU was a great project to work on really because the client and I just had a lot of fun working together. I’d come up with a design, sketch it out and send it to him. He’d call me up and verify a few details of the sketch, and then have his contractor build it. Sometimes, though, he’d come up with an alternative design and it would come out great- like the flooring in the main areas and in the bathroom. The piped wall shelving and countertop were also his selections while I suggested the penny tile. Even though he was a little skeptical of the pennies and the paint color he went ahead with these selections and actually liked it quite a bit once it was completed.
There were a alternative designs he chose that unfortunately didn’t quite work out. The dishwasher for an example was designed to be on the other side of the sink so not to bump into the range upon opening. My client ended up having to take the handle off the range. Another is that there was a tall cabinet planned adjacent to the fridge so upon entering the ADU you would see casework instead of the fridge. In addition, there would be a place for cereal boxes and canned foods.
All in all, this project was a great experience and I think it will be a functional and beautiful space for someone to raise a child in.
A big thank you to my client for the opportunity and hope to work with you on your 3rd ADU!
